GME professionals are often extraordinarily compassionate toward everyone except themselves.

We encourage residents to ask for support.
We remind struggling colleagues that one difficult day does not define their abilities.
We reassure faculty navigating change.

Yet when we make mistakes ourselves, our internal dialogue often becomes far less generous, often replaying conversations we've had and questioning decisions we've made. We wonder if we could have handled something differently.

It's important for us to remember that professional growth absolutely requires reflection. However, it also does not require self-criticism as its constant companion.
