Navigating GME
Systems for Success
|
|
One of the most important leadership shifts in GME is recognizing that every recurring problem is usually a systems issue, not a people issue. When the same questions, missed deadlines, communication gaps, or accreditation compliance concerns continue, the solution is rarely to work harder. It's to examine the process behind them. Strong programs are built on sustainable systems that create consistency, clarity, and accountability.
The good news is that meaningful systems improvement can begin with anyone. Some of the most impactful changes in GME begin when someone closest to the work identifies a challenge, asks thoughtful questions, and proposes a better way forward. If you find yourself repeatedly navigating the same frustration, consider it an opportunity rather than an obstacle. Your firsthand experience gives you valuable insight into where processes can be strengthened. This month, identify one task or workflow that consistently creates inefficiencies and challenge yourself to document the issue, explore potential solutions, and start a conversation with the appropriate stakeholders. Small operational improvements compound over time, and those incremental changes are often what separate programs that constantly react from those that confidently navigate challenges. Every stronger system begins with someone willing to advocate for a better one.

Before each PEC, CCC, GMEC, APE or faculty meeting, spend two minutes reviewing a relevant accreditation requirement. Small, consistent exposure builds confidence and improves decision-making over time. |
Compass for Well-Being
In GME, there is always one more email to answer, one more report to review, and one more issue competing for your attention. The work is important, but so are the people doing it. This month, give yourself permission to acknowledge what you've accomplished instead of focusing solely on what remains on your task list. Progress is rarely reflected on the tasks you complete in a day, but the residents and fellows you support, programs you strengthen and countless challenges you navigate behind the scenes as the backbone of graduate medical education training programs. Take a moment to reflect and recognize your impact. The work you do matters, and so do you!
